Kitenge Cleaning and Care

1. Washing

  • Hand Washing (Best Option):

    • Cold Water: Always wash Kitenge fabric in cold or lukewarm water to prevent the colors from fading or bleeding.
    • Mild Detergent: Use a gentle or mild detergent that is free of harsh chemicals and bleach. Avoid strong detergents that could strip the fabric of its vibrant colors.
    • Gentle Scrubbing: Gently scrub the fabric by hand, focusing on any stained areas, but avoid rubbing too harshly to protect the delicate patterns.
  • Machine Washing (Alternative Option):

    • If you choose to use a machine, place your Kitenge clothing in a laundry bag to protect it.
    • Use the gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent.
    • Wash Kitenge pieces separately or with similar colors, as bold prints may bleed slightly, especially in the first few washes.

2. Drying

  • Air Dry: Always air dry your Kitenge clothing. Hang it in a shaded area to dry naturally, as direct sunlight can fade the vibrant colors.
  • Avoid the Dryer: Do not tumble dry, as the high heat can cause the fabric to shrink and the colors to dull over time.

3. Ironing

  • Iron Inside-Out: To protect the printed design, iron your Kitenge clothing inside-out. This prevents the heat from directly impacting the fabric’s colors and patterns.
  • Use Low Heat: Set your iron to a low or medium setting to avoid scorching the fabric.
  • Steam if Needed: If wrinkles are stubborn, use a steam iron or gently spray the fabric with water before ironing.

4. Storage

  • Cool, Dry Place: Store your Kitenge clothes in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, to preserve the colors.
  • Fold, Don’t Hang: Fold your Kitenge garments rather than hanging them to avoid stretching or distorting the fabric.

5. Additional Care Tips

  • Test for Color Fastness: Before washing for the first time, you may want to test a small part of the fabric by dipping it in water to see if the colors bleed.
  • Avoid Bleach or Harsh Chemicals: Harsh chemicals and bleach can strip away the vibrant colors of Kitenge fabric, so always stick to mild, non-bleach detergents.
  • Spot Clean: For small stains, try spot cleaning with a damp cloth and a mild detergent instead of washing the entire garment.

By following these care instructions, your Kitenge clothing will maintain its bright colors, patterns, and overall quality for a long time!
